My Story

Business Coaching

Hi, I’m Francesca Esposito-Rose and I am a Business Mentor, Online Specialist, Author and Speaker. I have owned my own businesses now for 24 years and would you believe my first business was selling sliced mushrooms to the major Australian Airlines! I bought that business at the ripe old age of 19 when the previous owners were struggling to make ends meet. I took over the business with no business experience and expected it to flop. My overdraft was skyhigh so I was financially at high risk (this was back in the 80′s when interest rates had jumped the 19% barrier worldwide!) Intuitively, I made strategic changes to the way the business was run and instead of a total disaster, I quadrupled the customer base, trebled the product base and turned a great profit within 6 months. I went on to build that business for a further 3 years.

That was my first taste of turning a struggling business into a business success and I have never looked back! I was hooked on transforming businesses from then on!

I was still at University back then, studying the first ITdegree ever offered in Australia! So as well as studying and running my providoring business servicing hundreds of customers, I also worked part-time as a maths-tutor and waitress to build up my capital to grow my businesses further. (Thankfully I had great drivers to drive my fleet of trucks which had to deliver the mushrooms @ 1 am as our trucks weren’t air conditioned back then!)

In this simple mushroom run, I found my love for developing strategies that turned businesses around.

So I’d found my passion for business but I could also see that technology was going to revolutionise business in the future. I had a sense that “technology” was going to be hugely relevant. So when the opportunity to study an IT degree came up, I jumped at the chance. I knew it would give me the technical knowledge I would need to back the business strategy skills I already had a natural talent for.

The mix of technology and business was a match made in heaven for me.

And look at how far both the worlds of business and technology have come in a space of only 20 years! Business and Technology work hand in hand these days and in 2012 we couldn’t imagine a business world without technology. However what most of my clients struggle with is figuring out how technology fits into their business, which platforms they need to be on, what’s worth jumping on, and what’s not. This is confusing to many businesses and this feeling is completely justified because it is confusing!

The Internet hasn’t even had it’s 21st birthday and businesses are already confused about what technology to use and what not to bother with for their industry type.

After I graduated from University I went on to spend many years in the IT industry as an IT Business Analyst, IT Project Manager and then IT Director (CIO). By that stage I had long sold the providoring business (at a healthy profit), and went on to run multiple very successful businesses in the fields of IT recruitment and IT Consulting, and I have continued to develop solid business experience over the last two decades.

What started as a “knack” for business was no fluke. I have an intuitive way of spotting the weaknesses of any business. I can tune into where the business is going wrong and develop a successful strategy to fix it. This is my super-power.

And all those years of solid IT experience have given me the knowledge of systems and processes that further deepens my business insight. Even back when I was at high school, when I was tutoring primary kids in maths, my problem solving radar was razor sharp. At University I not only mentored high school kids below me, but I also tutored other University kids above my level.

Some people have a natural talent for music, art or woodworking. My gift is for problem solving, although, don’t give me a cake to bake or a DVD player to work out! lol.

I had always dreamed of becoming a doctor as a kid. I studied hard to gain my entry into Medicine, but when I got bitten by the technology bug during highschool, when crunchtime rolled around, I jumped into IT instead of medicine. I guess my passion for fixing, being the first on the scene, and having a deep love of helping others, remained with me. But instead of doctoring bodies, I am now doctoring businesses! Instead of prescribing medicine, I am prescribing strategies.

Many places I have worked at in the past at would fondly call me “Dr. Francesca”. I have also been called “Fireman Francesca, or “The Business Whisperer” at some client sites too because of my ability to solve problems quickly. But my favourite nickname though is “Dr. Francesca”, given that I almost became a doctor!

Mentor Business

My love of business goes deeper than this though. I even treated my little tutoring “business” back when I was a teenager as a “real” business. I read up on book-keeping (in the library, for those of you who remember World Encyclopaedia, the “original” Internet?) and I kept my own account-records in a little yellow notebook and we would talk about my growing “business” around the dinner table.

I come from a family of entrepreneurs, so running my own business has always been in my blood and comes very naturally to me.

I am now owner/founder of SummerHills.com, a successful Byron Bay Retreat in Australia which I founded 12 years ago with my husband and son. We were aching for a tree-change from the city-life of Sydney and we could see that modern life was only going to become more hectic. Our vision was to provide a sanctuary of beauty and serenity that others could escape to when their lives got busier too. Here’s my view every day! Breathtaking huh?

SummerHills Retreat Byron Bay Accommodation Bangalow

As the first ever Retreat to open in the Byron Bay area 12 years ago, we burst onto the scene with this concept of “Retreat”, buying an idyllic 113 acre property in the hinterland above Byron Bay and immediately setting up pampering and massage services, spa suites, meditation, yoga, long walks and paths, garden sculptures and delightful surroundings. Everything to do with relaxation and slowing down. This was back in the days when, if you mentioned the word “Retreat”, people would think you’d just stepped out of Woodstock! But having just stepped out of the Stock Exchange, I was far from this!

I guess I’m telling you this story as a way of letting you know that I am no ordinary Business Coach, I am also a current Business Owner myself, and always will be. I get business. I get you. I get the challenges that you are facing because I face them daily too. However I have over two decades of wisdom, successes (and mistakes) to share with you. I therefore have the knowledge and experience to guide you around the pitfalls and also to fast-track your success, faster than you can get there on your own.

Sheez, I wish I had a Business Mentor myself in my early days of business! There’s alot of mistakes I could have avoided!

A Business Coach not only helps you get clear on your goals, but as a Mentor I also set you up with strategies that really work. I also hold you accountable to your goals, not in an unfriendly way, but we do set measurable goals together. And we achieve them! We either set goals that are within your reach or we shoot for the stars! You choose your comfort zone. Either way, I do stretch your boundaries a little, of course, it’s my job to get you thinking outside the box!

But mainly what I do is unstick you, bring clarity to your business, plan strategies that setup a sustainable platform for your business to build, and then help you manage your growth.

And because my experience also spans many years in corporate and public management across many industries (banking, stock market, insurance, airlines, retailing, distribution, manufacturing, electricity, gas, building, hospitality, events, spa & health) I will learn your industry very quickly and intuitively. I can bring your business right the point where your dreams become a reality.

So DREAM BIG because I can help you get there!

My clients also benefit from my past life as an IT Consultant and IT Business Analyst because I translate the “online” world into easy understandable chunks for you. I have a no “geek-speak” policy which means I will quickly focus your business onto what it needs to do (and what it can skip over) in the online world. Unless of course you’re a fellow geek, then we can geek-speak until our propellers drop off!

I do alot of work with other technoratis, SMO’s, marketing agencies, media companies and other professionals “in the field”.

So if you need a sounding board or need to brainstorm some ideas or need help to bring your Social Media skills up to scratch – I’ve just written a book on the subject, so call me! I can help you too if you’re a techo….

Being very passionate (Hint: Italian AND a Leo. LOL), creating my thelikeffect™ Facebook Business 10-step Method took 3 years to birth. As my first Social Media baby, I had to get it right. I had to prove it.

thelikeffect™ 10-step method took thousands of hours of research, spit and polish, and countless testing on many many clients (all willing!). But I’m stoked with the results. This is a method that I can now use with all my clients and workshops because I know it’s a strategy that works. I’ve proven it countless times.

In this research period, as I was developing this 10-step method, I also authored the Novice2Ninja Book Series. Book 1 “Facebook for Business” is out now as an eBook, it goes to print soon (August 2012) and Book 2 in the series is due out soon (Q4 2012).

My style in both writing and management is fresh and straight-talking. I focus on getting the job done, quickly and efficiently.

My favourite word is “kick-arse” and you will see I use this alot.

I believe that, regardless of what you’re doing, whether you’re selling cupcakes at the corner store, or multi-million dollar finance deals to brokers, unless your strategy is successful, you’re just wasting your time because you’re being drowned out amongst the thousands of other businesses offering a similar product.

My strategies are smart, sustainable and steeped in a wealth of business experience and technical knowledge.

And when I don’t know something, I have a vast network of experts around the world that I can draw on for specific advice or that I can put you in touch with. I am therefore a one-stop-shop. I love to collaborate!

I give away alot of juicy business tips and social media strategy advice on my blog, videos and  Facebook Page – and all this is for free.

I could charge a membership fee on my website for access to this information, but I choose not to. I am community minded and I believe that sharing information and wisdom is the fundamental cornerstone of growing an intelligent and authentic culture across the planet. However, if you would like to buy my book or engage me as a speaker, or attend one of my workshops, all the products you buy from this website are much appreciated as they all help to support the future information that I joyously provide for free right here.

I am essentially an independant artisan, a solopreneur, an indipreneur, a mumpreneur, or whatever you’d like to call it.

I work for myself, and no-one pays me sick leave or holiday pay. As an author and coach, I essentially live the life of an artist. This brings me joy and I am living my dream life.

I wake up every day filled with passion and energy to start a new work day (most days), springing into action and wondering who I will be able to help today.

For me, “working” brings me joy, because I love being in business, and I love helping other people find the voice in their business too. I just thrive on helping other business owners find the juice in what they do.

I will also help you find new profit and sales funnels that you never had access to before. I am here to personally help your business achieve success that, to date, you have only fantasized about.

In my capacity as a Business Coach and Online Specialist, I help legal firms and hairdressers, stock market traders and photographers, retail shops and wholesales, charities and NPO’s. I can suit up to meet your CEO (I had over 12 years as a suited executive myself, so I know the gig), I can meet you in jeans at a coffee shop or we can skype in our pyjamas. Similarly, if you prefer to work over email or over the phone, I am flexible. So, reach out to me, I am friendly and my friends say I’m funny. However I can help your business more than I can entertain you, either way, I would love to hear your story.

I am also a mum with a teenager at home, a wife, and I spend my spare time daggy-dancing at Zumba which is one way I like to relax and switch off. So I guess that also makes me kinda fun, or at least a 43 year old with an extensive set of 1980′s pop-disco grooves.

How do you relax? Downtime is just as important to every business owner as paying the rent. Taking regular breaks to retreat and recharge your batteries is also vital to the sustainability of your business life. Sometimes, this is one of the first areas we have to sort out when I initially sit with a client. I truly believe that working smarter, not harder, is very achieveable in every business. And with the right systems, a plan that filters out the unnnecessary, and a solid strategy, I can help you achieve a more profitable business with more free time doing the things you love.

Whatever your story is, wherever you are up to, whether your business is new or old, fresh or stale, I am here to help super-charge your business beyond your wildest dreams.

I look forward to sharing your journey of business success with you. And check out my books and mentoring, if you need some help in your business.

Facebook Business Marketing

The Like Effect is THE 101 for Facebook success, and the insights in this book offer timeless advice that can be applied to all marketing vehicles. Even if Facebook as we know it was wiped off cyberspace tomorrow, the concept of user generated content, and the use of social media to engage customers is here to stay!! The creation of unique content to entertain and relate to your customers is a concept that is relatively new in the timeline of marketing. Never before have we had such personal access to our current and potential customers. So many businesses struggle with how to deal with this personal relationship and The Like Effect demystifies this with a clear and concise Back to Basics approach.  The Like Effect guides you through the process, and encourages you to stick with what you do best as a business, and embrace the fact that ‘You are your story’! It also demystifies the fear of inviting unbridled customer feedback. This book’s positive approach to feedback as an opportunity for product development and genuine discussion, is a refreshing take on ‘putting your money where your mouth is’. Both as a Media professional with 20 years experience, and as the wife of a Director of a Small to Medium business, I say this book is a must read!”

Facebook Business

I recently read thelikeffect and it’s a must read! As the executive director of a national events business I felt I didn’t have time for Facebook. How wrong was I! We now realise that it’s an integral cog of our marketing mix. I have now engaged a new strategy to improve my online presence. I found the chapters on frequency of posting especially relevant. We found the book was well written and fun and the succinct summary tables are really helpful as I will be using my Melbourne manager to manage a new campaign for our business. Thanks to thelikeffect for pulling us into the 21st century! And for older businesses and the non tech savvy that are complaining about the online curse stealing away their incomes – it’s time to embrace and glean the benefits of the e-revolution.” www.ToplessEvents.com.au

Kelly Fitzpatrick of Calabash Media, London, says….

Being in the digital industry myself, I was sceptical to purchase a book such as ‘ The Like Effect’. But I realised, I didn’t have the time nor the patience to become an expert at social media, especially the intricate details of Facebook for business! I’ve been in the industry way too long to understand that the internet is forever moving. And Social media is no exception. It was a dark art for a while, and no one really knew what to do with it. Nor did anyone have the confidence to actually share their thoughts with the rest of the world. My clients expected me to be an expert immediately on this new platform, and I guess I should be. Hence this book came in very handy!!

The author is very thorough and digs deep into the detail, which helps put social media, as a medium, into perspective.  Her chapter summaries and on-the-spot exercises are superb and spot-on-the-mark. They forced me to apply my own perspective right there-and-then (which I find to be the hardest step when it comes to generating my own content). The author clearly explains when content would be relevant to my industry or not and I found this to be extremely helpful. After all, I only have limited time to learn this new platform of “Social Media”.

With the small investment of this book “Novice2Ninja”, I have been able apply what it taught me, not only my own business, but I also now have the confidence to advise my clients how to approach Facebook for their own businesses.”

Alex Rappel, Web Communications and Social Media Officer for www.canstar.com.au and www.FasterLouder.com, Brisbane, says….

Business Facebook help

In my line of work as a Social Media Officer for two companies, I’m finding that Social media is still a hard sell to ‘old guard’ business people for two reasons. (1) It’s not an exact science and (2) not everyone  understands the power of it. To top that off, it’s difficult to quantify the real results you get as a direct result of the hard work you put into Social Media, let alone measuring the benefits of the time you take to create the content.

This in particular is why The Like Effect “Novice2Ninja” is an ideal tool for businesses everywhere. Not only does it demystify the toughest social media market around (the Facebook universe being the domain that everyone wants to rule in), but it does so in language that is both insightful, funny and easily accessible. Because of this, this book is a great resource for both high-end executives who want to understand why their company suddenly requires a Social Media Team, and also to the mum and dad small business owners who want to put their name on the map.

While Facebook is one piece of the social media puzzle (but a large one), this book is a valuable tool for the first time user who suddenly finds they are taking the reigns of the company Facebook page. And while more experienced social media experts may already be familiar with some content of the book, it’s an essential read regardless of how experienced you are in social media as this book really gives you everything you need to know about how to be successful in Facebook for business, on a plate, so that you’re not wasting your time.

But what this book does most brilliantly, is that it teaches everyone the value of customer engagement at all costs. Fan engagement is a value that this book actually measures and weighs. But the book goes one step further. It actually teaches you how to measure the social media results of your own company! So just for this reason alone, it is easy to recommend this book. But there are many other reasons why both the inexperienced and the experienced social media initiates should be reading this book right now. ”
